Cottage Information

Harbour Lights is a small, modernised fisherman's cottage, a Grade II listed building dating from the late eighteenth century and situated in the fishing and yachting village of Rye Harbour. It is right on the harbour "front" which consists of half a dozen picturesque cottages and the William The Conqueror pub. It is a stone's throw from the tidal River Rother and the RNLI lifeboat station, and not far from the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (of particular interest to bird-watchers). The sea is about half a mile away, approached on the Rye Harbour side by a gated road which prevents access by cars. Thus the beach (part shingle, part sand, no "amenities") does not get very crowded. Westward, extensive shingle, grazing land and marsh provide open country walking to Winchelsea. The sands at Camber are five miles away by road.

Rye Harbour is one and a half miles from Rye and about 70 miles from London. The ancient town of Rye, one of the Cinque Ports, is perched on a hill overlooking the Romney marshes, and is well known for its steep cobbled streets, picturesque timbered houses and historic Mermaid Inn, and also for its association with artists and writers, such as Henry James and E.F.Benson. There are numerous antique shops and shops selling the locally made pottery. Nearby is the attractive old town of Winchelsea, while eight miles away lies the seaside resort of Hastings. Many interesting excursions may be made into Kent and Sussex : to Canterbury, Battle (site of the Battle of Hastings), and to the National Trust properties of Sissinghurst, Batemans (home of Rudyard Kipling) and Smallhythe Place (home of the actress Ellen Terry). Day trips to France are possible from Dover or by Eurostar from Ashford.

The cottage is comfortably furnished and fully equipped for family holidays. Crockery, glass, cutlery, kitchen equipment, bedlinen and towels are provided. The reception rooms each have a storage heater, open fire (coal and logs available by arrangement) and an electric heater. Each bedroom has an electric heater. Electricity charges are included in the rent.
